On June 25th, 2019, I packed my bags and headed for Cork, once more into the cutting room with The Young Offenders. I had been keen to work with Jackie Jarvis – we’d met a few times at Dublin Editors event and more formally prior to taking on this job, so it was a really joy to actually start working together. It’s always a bit nerve-racking on the first day, especially when you’re cutting in a converted creamery in rural Cork, with a healthy waft of cows coming across the field and broadband that can best be described as intermittently glacial. Anyway, our machines had been set up and we started.
The plan was to split the editing between myself and Julian Ulrichs – four blocks of three each, spanning seasons 2 and 3 of this show which had been well established in its 1st season back in 2017. There were a total four directors – I had been allocated to work with Jim Archer initially for block 2 and Simon Delaney for block 4 – both great guys. The show’s creator – Peter Foott – was also showrunner and co-writer. Peter is amazingly talented and a fantastic bloke to be around. And keeping the ship afloat was Tim Whitby, an utter gent.
